Air Operations Squadron air operations are for emergency services as well as proficiency flying and cadet orientation flights. Illinois Civil Air Patrol air operations also include cadet instruction at Johnson Flight Academy. Instruction is offered in powered aircraft, gliders, and hot air balloons. Emergency services air operations include search and rescue flights, damage assessment and other reconnaissance, emergency transport, and counter narcotics flights. Members may participate as mission pilots, mission observers, or mission scanners. Additional duties include flightline marshalling and air operations branch directors. Cadet orientation flights are offered to each cadet under the age of 18. These flights are in CAP aircraft and are free of charge. In addition, CAP orientation flights are offered to JAFROTC and AFROTC cadets. Orientation flights provide a basic understanding of how aircraft maneuver and operate in the United States. All orientation cadets are given the opportunity to experience flight “hands-on” with a qualified CAP orientation pilot.
